"Folks are as happy as they make their minds up to be." Abe Lincoln
When I first read that quote, I wasn't sure that I agreed. Experiencing happiness seemed as elusive as trying to step on one's shadow. Then I read that psychologists believe that how one thinks affects their health, happiness and well-being. HMMMM....... Intersting...Then the words of that sixties song echoes in my brain, "Happiness is just an illusion...."
Well, I had experienced happiness , so it couldn't be an illusion, but it sure seemed to be dependent on circumstances or the luck of the draw. If what Lincoln said was true, it would be empowering, wouldn't it? I put it to the test and I have found that one can choose to be happy. I have researched the subject in depth and have developed techniques that I have practiced myself and have experienced the results! Others have done the same and so can you!!
It's time to experience happiness and the benefits of better health and better relationships.

NEW BEGINNINGS
Is there something inside you that is screaming for change? If there is, you know it. Relentlessly, it makes its presence known, if even just as a deep dissatisfaction or lack of peace in your soul. Change can be very threatening, so often we just accept the nagging unrest as inevitable.
Yet, we see new beginnings everywhere in life. Birth, the first day of school, graduation, marriage, parenthood, starting a career, changing a career, divorce, etc. are all examples. Sometimes, the sheer enthusiasm and excitement are enough to see us through. Sometimes, significant others are there for us to cheer us on or encourage us.
Then, there are the New Year's Resolutions and the “turning over a new leaf”; well meant plans that often fade into nothing more than a memory. Suppose you have traits or character defects that you wish to change? It can seem overwhelming. I am going to assume that there is at least one thing in your life that you want to change or else you would not be reading this. If you are satisfied with your life as it is, read no more; but if you are looking for a new beginning let's continue.
Have you ever tried stepping on your shadow? It's always just out of reach. Abraham Lincoln said, Folks are as happy as they make their mind up to be.” Is it possible that a change in the way we think or perceive things can help give us a new beginning? Can we change our reality by changing the way we act in any given situation? How do we change how we think? If we act differently than the way we feel, does that make us a dishonest phony?
Long ago, a read a “Dear Abby” letter from a woman who was very unhappy in her marriage. Her husband was not very supportive or nurturing, in fact, he could be down right nasty. She decided that she was going to leave him. Yet, they had been fighting so much; leaving would be too good for him. It might make him happy. He had made her so unhappy that she wanted revenge. She decided that she would stop fighting with him.
She would be sweet, kind, and loving to him. She would make him happy and THEN leave him. This would really hurt him, she reasoned. To her surprise, he responded in kind and she didn't want to leave him. Their marriage was now happy! Now she was kind and sweet to him because she wanted to. Yet, when she started, she was only nice to him because she was thinking of her plan of revenge. It was the change of action that actually changed her reality. How she felt was immaterial. She set forth a new beginning in her life and her marriage by changing her actions.
I believe that as we endeavor to change how we think, and how we act, we can begin again and achieve happiness. Happiness is a decision. I am making a conscious choice to have a new beginning. There are some things I want to change about myself and some areas of my life that are needing change. The changes that I am about to make will help me achieve better health, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
